As a corps member, you'll be serving your country for a year, but that doesn't mean you can't take some time off when you need it. In fact, there are several types of leave that you can take during your NYSC service year to attend to personal matters or simply to rest and recharge. Here are six types of NYSC leave that you should know about:
- Casual Leave/Camp Rest Leave: While not officially recognized by NYSC, most employers allow new corps members to take some time off to settle down after arriving at camp.
- Convocation Leave: If you need to attend your graduation ceremony, you can take up to a week off for this purpose.
- Marriage Leave: If you're planning to tie the knot during your service year, you can take up to 14 days off for the wedding. Just be sure to apply for this leave at least four weeks in advance.
- Terminal Leave: When your service year is coming to an end, you can take up to three weeks off as terminal leave. This is a great opportunity to travel, visit family and friends, or simply relax after a year of hard work.
- Maternity Leave: If you're pregnant, you're entitled to 12 weeks of maternity leave, during which you'll receive your full monthly allowance. However, you won't be eligible for terminal leave.
- Medical Leave: If you become seriously ill during your service year, you can apply for medical leave on the recommendation of a doctor from a government-approved hospital. The state coordinator will grant this leave if it's deemed necessary.
Remember, taking care of yourself is just as important as serving your country. By understanding your options for NYSC leave, you can make the most of your service year and ensure that you're able to attend to personal matters when needed.
