6 Key Things Corps Members Can Do During Your Service Year to Secure a Brighter Future After Service
As a corps member serving in Nigeria, your journey after service sometimes is very cloudy and without any precise direction.
This mainly happens when a corps member doesn't maximize every useful time he has to plan and build for his future.
The majority just go with the flow, hang out with friends(which is not necessarily a bad thing) or even play around with corps members of the opposite sex.
Take the story of corper Shola as a lesson. He was coming from a home that manages to eat and survive and is the first son of the house. He just started serving in January.
He enters the community with the mindset of enjoying his life and spending his allowee without any wise plans like investing in himself or saving to invest or start a business.
Towards the end of the service, the "After-Service malaria" catches him and he is wondering what he would do.
Suppose you have this corper Shola mindset! Read this carefully, because it was written just for you.
There are several things you can do to secure a bright future after your service year. Here are some of them:
- Acquire skills: Investing your free time and money during your service year to learn new skills that will make you more valuable in the job market is one of the most essential things that every corps member should engage in. You can take online courses, attend workshops and seminars, or even volunteer for projects that will help you gain practical experience. One of the main reasons for starting the BetaKopa academy is to bring Corps members like you into the tech industry by equipping you with in-demand tech skills that will insure your life and career during and after service.
- Networking: Networking is one of the most vital keys to succeeding in any career, and it's especially important as a youth corps member in Nigeria. Use your time during the service year to connect with people in your field of interest, attend networking events and conferences, and build relationships with professionals. Every valuable relationship you gain during your service year will play a key role in helping you build a future of possibilities, favours and opportunities. Never underestimate the power of networking.
- Start a side hustle: You can start a small business or side hustle to supplement your income during your service year. This will not only give you some extra cash but will also help you develop entrepreneurial skills that will be useful in the future. Those experiences that you want to get by paying for a professional certificate in project management and the likes of it can actually be gotten by putting yourself in the forefront by starting a side hustle.
- Save and invest: Try to save as much money as you can during your service year and invest in a diversified portfolio of assets that will grow over time. This will give you a solid financial foundation for your future. But remember, never invest your savings into Ponzi or the popular Get-Rich-quick schemes. It always ends in sorrow. One of the things you can do here if you don't have any idea what to invest in is to find a friend or someone in business you can sign an official agreement. Then, start investing in their business. This is just an idea on my part and not a recommendation.
- Build your resume: Use your service year to build your resume by taking on leadership roles, participating in community development projects, and contributing to your community in other ways. This will make you more attractive to future employers. No company will ever employ you without demanding a resume. Are you wondering how to create one? In the BetaKopa training, we have a session where you get schooled on the titbits of CV and Resume creation and you even get Samples and templates for free on how to create one.
- Stay informed: Stay up-to-date on the latest trends and developments in your field of interest. Read industry publications, attend conferences, and follow thought leaders on social media. Another method that can help you stay informed is by joining the right communities online and offline. Communities are there to keep you on track with trending industry events and Job opportunities. In the Betakopa community, we uphold the legacy of serving hot and trending offers and important trends to help you keep up in your tech journey.
Now I know you don't want to be like corper Shola who is part of the group called "Association of Goalless Corpers" or NFA(No Future Ambition). If you have other better names, you can leave them in the comment section.
By following these tips, you can set yourself up for a bright future after your service year in Nigeria. Good luck
